How to Decorate a Tiered Tray: A Step by Step Guide

So you've got a tiered tray and all the pieces that you want to decorate it with, but how do you style it? It can be difficult to figure out what to put on it and how to place everything for a nice cohesive look. But don't worry! I have some tips that will help you make your tiered tray look fabulous and eye-catching.

  1. Start by collecting your must-haves (these are our suggestions) and decide what theme you want to style your tray.
  2. Place items in order from largest to smallest (in size and weight). To create a balanced look, put big pieces next to smaller pieces...you don't want all the little things on the bottom and the big on top or vice versa. If you have a big object on the top left then put a big object on the bottom right and so on.
  3. Place smaller pieces on risers so they don't get "lost" in your tray but also to vary the height of your decor. These can be small unfinished pieces of wood or actual mini wood stands with small feet. Don't worry too much if they aren't "pretty", we'll fix that in the next step.
  4. Add greenery to every tier. These work as great fillers and also to hide risers that don't have a finished look. Greenery stems work well here because they can hang over the edge a little for a bit more style.
  5. Check your work! Ask yourself these questions:
  • Do I have a variety of textures and heights?
  • Do I have a sign of some sort with a sentiment/quote/monogram/etc?
  • What is my statement piece (where is your eye drawn to first?) and is it very visible?
  • Is it balanced? If you have greenery hanging over the left side of the bottom tier, do you have something hanging off on the right side too on either tier?

The final and most important question would be Do you love it? If not, keep moving things around or leave it and shift pieces as you walk by over the next few days. Obviously, these are just suggestions and you can style your tray however you like it best! Don't be stressed while arranging your pieces, you've worked so hard to gather everything together, enjoy the final step of seeing it all come together.
